After finding my new reference photo, I started working on my environment again. I imported some trees from the Unreal Engine Marketplace to work as place-holders for now. Later on, I will create my own trees and replace these, but for now they will work to give me an idea of how the scene is coming together.

I also decided that my current terrain was too flat to be believable, so I created a new terrain that I then sculpted to look more like snow than the one above.

After I was happy with the terrain, I focused on the material that I would use for painting the terrain. My material network is pictured below.

After I got my basic textures and the landscape layer blend to work, I used the Micro and Macro Texture Variation nodes from the starter content to vary the texture so that the tiling would not be as noticeable. I then applied the material to the terrain to see how it would look.

While I was happy that the material worked as intended, I was not as happy with the way the snow actually looked. So I decided to spend a while experimenting with the material and with different textures to see if I could make it look better.

I ended up liking the clean look of the last image, so I decided to go with it. I increased the displacement on the material so that it was a bit more pronounced, and I was happy with the way it turned out.
